Not tonight, I'm deep conditioning my hair...

Back in the day, one of the greatest excuses to pass on a potentially bad date and stay home on a Friday night was, "I'm washing my hair." Funny, those guys never picked up on the real meaning, but I think those girls had a great idea when they made that one up. I must admit, from time to time I enjoy using a Friday night for a deep conditioning hair treatment, a home hair coloring, a mani/pedi, some eyebrow maintenance...sometimes an entire night of beauty. It's especially good if I plan on going out Saturday night!

I usually choose Friday nights for a deep conditioning hair treatment because I'm always super tired after a long week of work, and I find it a nice way to treat myself, relax, and take care of my hair at the same time.  Plus, my deep conditioning treatments have a tendency to leave my hair unusually soft and hard to style. That's fine for my Saturday morning when I'm running errands, going to the gym, doing some cleaning around the house. It's not something I want to deal with on a Monday morning when I'm getting ready for work!

Tonight I plan on using one of my favorite hair moisturizing treatments - Mayonnaise. Yep, mayo. This treatment is great for seeping deep into those hair strands and adding much needed moisture, especially in the winter months. At first I was a little concerned about putting 'food' on my hair, but I got over it pretty quick after seeing the results, and it is now one of my favorite natural beauty secrets.

The treatment is easy too:
Just massage 1/4 to 1 cup (depending on hair length) of Mayonnaise into dry hair. Make sure to use this time to massage your scalp as well - that's the relaxing part! I use a little at a time, concentrating on my dry ends and work my way up towards my scalp. You can also just do the ends if you feel that's where you need to focus the hydration.

Once your hair is coated thoroughly (and remember, less is more in this case!) wrap your hair in a pile on top of your head and cover with a plastic shower cap. If you don't have a shower cap, a plastic bag, or even saran wrap works just as well. You really just want to keep the mayo seeping into your hair and not getting all over the place, it is very greasy. I also like to wrap a towel around the plastic bag. It's more secure and comfortable and it keeps my head warm while the mayo goes to work.

With head wrapped in plastic (my husband just loves this look I'm sure), set a timer for 10-30 minutes depending on your hair length and dryness. I'd say 10 minutes would work for everyone but you 30 minute girls know who you are! I could probably go at least 45 minutes with this treatment, but I truly think 30 minutes is plenty of time for a great deep condition.

After you think you've gone long enough, rinse the mayo out thoroughly in the shower with warm water. You'll immediately notice the difference in your hair's texture and manageability. After rinsing, shampoo and condition as usual. You will probably only need a tiny bit of conditioner after a treatment like this. You'll find your hair is super soft and extra shiny.

So once and a while pick a Friday night for yourself, put the fancy schmancy treatments away and give mayo a try, I bet you'll love the results!
