Over the weekend, Deanna and I were lucky enough to be invited to review Riccardo Maggiore’s new salon location in the flat iron district. What a beautiful salon -- and conveniently located just a short walking distance from Penn Station. Upon arriving at the salon (about a half an hour earlier than scheduled) the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We were taken right back to meet our stylists, Marcus & Saniye.

My appointment was for a full highlight with Marcus. After a very thorough consultation, he started to work his magic. Marcus was very friendly and held very pleasant conversations with both Deanna and I while he was working but still managed to put get a full head of foils in place quickly, efficiently and very VERY neatly! What really stood out to me about Marcus was his attention to detail. He really listened to what I didn't like about my current style and, from that, was able to place the foils perfectly to give me the more subtle highlight I was looking for all while blending in the existing chunky highlight. After I processed for about fifteen minutes, he mixed up a gloss to compliment the highlight and brighten up my existing highlights. Marcus had his assistant shampoo me and apply the gloss, and let me just say, I am sure glad he did. The assistant gave an extremely relaxing shampoo, complete with a neck massage, which absolutely took the services over the top. As a licensed stylist, I am usually never 100% satisfied with hair services and have become a bit of a salon snob, but this time I would not have changed a thing.

Luckily, between Deanna and I, we were able to experience a lot at this salon. She was scheduled for a single process color service with Saniye and was able to review the salon from more of a consumer perspective. Deanna, whose current stylist has been using semi-permanent color on her, came well prepared with an arsenal of photos for the stylist to look through as she was ready to take the plunge into permanent hair color. After a color and cut consultation, Saniye set off to mix-up her magic color potion. Both of us were more than impressed with how quickly she was able to get the color applied (I was particularly impressed, knowing this leads to more even processing time and better overall color results.) She was generous in applying the color, leaving no hair untouched and did not have to go back to re-mix until it was time to run through the ends. Deanna had the same lovely shampoo experience, and the assistant was kind enough to take the extra few minutes to make sure she removed any and all stain she could see. Her hair color came out beautiful, rich and incredibly shiny and the stylist did a wonderful job on Deanna's blow out -- it really complimented her new fabulous cut. Deanna said, "She was very knowledgeable about the kind of service she was doing. She saw and fully understood my vision and followed through with it. She was professional, friendly and genuinely made me feel like she cared about my hair and what I wanted. You could tell she was confident in what she did so, to me, as a consumer, that showed she knew what she was doing and made me feel more trusting of her."

Overall, these stylists were extremely impressive. We would absolutely recommend taking a trip to Riccardo Maggiore's salon next time you are in the city for a little r&r and pampering. You will not regret this salon selection! They will surely blow you away. ;)

tracey cunningham, tracey cunningham stylist, tracey cunningham coloristYou may not know who Tracey Cunningham is, but I know you have seen her work! Tracey Cunningham is the Creative Consultant for Color at Redken, and also one of the most sought-after colorists by Hollywood's stars. Her clients sound like a red carpet -- Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Rose McGowan, Nicole Ritchie, and many many more.

Celebs aren't the only one singing Tracey's praises. She just accepted 2011's Hollywood Style award for Colorist of the Year! These awards are given to trendsetters who influence the trends of style and fashion.

We have Tracey's hot color tips for the fall and winter to share with you, too! She has given us the 411 on what's gonna be big for brunettes, redheads, and blondes this season.

Brunettes - Dark to Light Ombre like Emily Bluntemily blunt, emily blunt hair, emily blunt hair style, emily blunt hair color, emily blunt ombre hair

“The look of the upcoming season will continue to be the ‘Illumination’ effect.  It is the hottest haircolor trend in Hollywood right now and it can be seen on every red carpet! It is a fun look that welcomes the winter months going brunette around the base and gradually going lighter down to the ends of the hair.  Time is always of the essence and with the ‘Illumination’ look, you don’t have to visit your colorist as often as you would for regular highlights since color isn’t applied on the roots.”

Redheads - Fun in the Sun for Fall like Isla Fisher

“Isla’s color is one of my favorite looks. The shine in her hair gives her a vibrant look from head to toe. This fall you will see this look on many of my celebrity clients as it’s a very seasonal trend.  The color is in-between a strawberry blonde red and a ginger red; it is the perfect touch of ‘fun- in-the-sun look’ after the summer months.” emma stone, emma stone blonde hair, emma stone hair, emma stone hair color, emma stone blonde

Blondes - Make A Statement like Emma Stone

“Emma’s new blonde look has been quite the buzz with the media. This look is the result of a few visits to the salon to get it just right. The most important aspect to this look is keeping your locks hydrated to reduce breakage from the lightener. The look has highlights and lowlights throughout the hair and an ultra blonde base.”

Fox, Rebecca Gayheart, and Candace Bushnell.

  • Blunt Bangs are all the Rage!

kim-kardashian1StyleBell recently noticed a trend taking over the celebrity hair circles.  Blunt bangs are all the rage and if done properly can really make an impact.  We decided to ask celeb stylist Nicholas Penna, Jr. of the “Best of Boston” salon, Salon Capri, his thoughts on this new hair trend.

    1. Why are Blunt Bangs the hot style for Spring?

Blunt bangs are the hot style for spring because they add edge to hair. For a long time, soft hair was the trend and now there’s a change with some attitude. Celebrities such as Kate Hudson in the new movie Bride Wars and Erin Lucas from MTV’s newest reality endeavor, The City, are both sporting blunt bangs which makes it even hotter.

    2. What hair type does this style work best on?

Blunt bangs typically look best with straight hair that is cut all at one length. However, we've recently seen stars like Kim Kardashian wearing her blunt bangs with wavy hair creating a contrast between the hip, edgy bang with romantic, tousled hair. Another variation to the blunt bang is to incorporate angles that frame your face, such as Anne Hathaway’s haircut.

    3. What face shape do these bangs look best on?

Blunt bangs work well for everyone, if done right. Many times, younger people can pull off the style the best, but virtually anyone can sport this look. The best face shape for blunt bangs is a longer, oval-shaped face.

    4. What are some other great bang choices for girls who do not have the appropriate hair texture/face shape?

Longer bangs that can be pushed to the side of the face add movement to the hairstyle, such as the side swept bang. This type of bang is the most universally worn and can look great on many different face shapes/hair textures.

    5. Additional tips...

Blunt bangs add to style to your look, even when your hair is pulled back into a ponytail. You can just blow out your bangs and throw your hair back. It adds an egde to your look and gives you a change that's not as drastic as a shorter haircut.

I think that this style is definitely going to last well into this season. It is a faddy look, but I think it’s one that will stand the test of time. As it evolves, I imagine people will start to wear the bang in different ways, more tailored to their personality.

Thanks Nicholas!  Check out StyleBell's slideshow on fantastic blunt bang looks!

  • Celebrity HairStylist: David Stanko

david stanko celebrity hair stylist and coloristA few weeks ago I met an incredible colorist and stylist that I have to rave about, David Stanko.  He is cool, hip, suave, and overall a complete charmer!   David Stanko’s first salon job was in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at age 18, cleaning hairbrushes and mixing color. Way humble beginnings for this celebrity colorist.  Recently, Stanko spearheaded the testing and technical execution of Redken's haircolor and lightener brands. Today, as Haircolor Consultant for Redken 5th Avenue NYC and a working salon colorist in New York City, David has the unique opportunity to exercise his wide range of gifts and that he does.

I walked into the Angelo David Salon in New York City, steps from Grand Central Station.  David greeted me in the hallway with complete charm overload.  I had a divine cup of coffee and I was on my way to highlight heaven.  He performed three incredible treatments on my hair; sparse highlights near the bangs just to lighten up my very dark brown hair, Redken’s Shades EQ clear gloss (which I will elaborate more in another post) to create a lustrous shine, and Redken’s Real Control treatment to soften the hair (see more on Redken Real Control).

Can I just say wow!  Within in seconds David analyzed my hair, asked me a few lifestyle questions, and devised a highlight course of action.  I can’t say enough about him!  The results were incredible.  The lustrous shine and dazzling sparkle was amazing.  Clearly he knows what he is doing. David’s haircolor work has been styled by such talents as Serge Normant, Oribe and Orlando Pita. He has also been featured in the pages of top fashion publications, including Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, In-Style, Latina and Elle, not to mention nearly every North American trade magazine American Salon, Modern Salon, Launchpad, Estetica and Hair Color & Design Magazine.

In the NYC area and want to make an appointment?  Call and make an appointment at the Angelo David Salon at 212-813-6620.
